Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy – the Neck

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) for the Neck covers the major clinical orthopedic assessment and treatment techniques for the neck. This course is a 2-day hands-on workshop.

Day one begins with orthopedic assessment for the common neuromusculoskeletal conditions of the neck. We then cover body mechanics for deep pressure for working the neck in supine, prone, side-lying, ¾ side-lying, and seated positions. With proper body mechanics, you will learn how the neck can be worked deeply with little effort. We also learn how to palpate and safely and effectively work the scalenes and longus musculature of the anterior neck.

Day two covers stretching, including arthrofascial stretching (AFS) techniques. We begin with basic stretching for the functional muscle groups of the neck and then learn how to target each specific neck muscle with multiplane stretching. We then cover advanced neural inhibition stretching techniques, including Contract Relax (PNF/PIR), Agonist Contract (the basis for AIS), and Contract Relax Agonist Contract stretching techniques. Day two concludes with AFS (soft tissue Grade IV joint mobilization for manual therapists), including traction, for the cervical spine. AFS is the only effective means of stretching specific hypomobilities of the neck.

Clinical treatment strategy as well as precautions and contraindications are also covered. These manual therapy skills will empower you to do effective clinical orthopedic work. Throughout this hands-on workshop, Dr. Joe Muscolino reinforces the underlying mechanisms for each of the assessment and treatment techniques, encouraging critical reasoning skills.

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy for the Neck is part of larger Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) Certification. The other hands-on workshops in this series cover the low back/pelvis, upper extremity, lower extremity, and AFS.

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy – Thoracic Spine and Ribcage

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) for the Thoracic Spine and Ribcage covers the major clinical orthopedic assessment and treatment techniques for the thoracic spine and ribcage. This course is a 2-day hands-on workshop.

Day one begins with postural, orthopedic, and palpation assessment for the common neuromusculoskeletal conditions of the region, including upper crossed syndrome. We then cover body mechanics for deep pressure for working the thoracic spine and ribcage. With proper body mechanics, you will learn how the thoracic region can be worked deeply with little effort.

Day two covers stretching, including arthrofascial stretching (AFS) techniques. We begin with basic stretching for the functional muscle groups of the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle and then learn how to target each specific muscle with multiplane stretching. We then cover advanced neural inhibition stretching techniques, including Contract Relax (PNF/PIR), Agonist Contract (the basis for AIS), and Contract Relax Agonist Contract stretching techniques. Day two concludes with AFS (soft tissue Grade IV joint mobilization for manual therapists), including traction, for the thoracic spine and ribcage. Become certified in Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT).

Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy Certification involves a series of five in-person workshops and two distance learning courses. Together, these workshops and courses address advanced clinical orthopedic assessment and treatment techniques, as well as musculoskeletal pathology, and kinesiology for the entire body.

Becoming a Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapist (COMT) means that you will learn how to remedy specific musculoskeletal complaints with which your client presents. These workshops are all hands-on and always address each assessment and treatment technique from the point of view of critical thinking so you can creatively apply your techniques for maximal results!

Each of the two-day hands-on workshops will cover the following assessment and treatment protocols:

  • Efficient body mechanics for deep pressure massage – Learn how to work from your core so you work smarter instead of harder.
  • Orthopedic assessment testing – Determine which treatment techniques are safe and effective to use by having a clear assessment picture of your client’s condition.
  • Stretching – Learn how to figure out how to most effectively stretch each muscle of the client instead of having to memorize stretching protocols.
  • Advanced stretching techniques – Learn how to use contract relax (CR), also known as post-isometric relaxation (PIR), also known as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) technique; and also agonist contract (AC) technique (the basis for Aaron Mattes’ Active Isolated Stretching [AIS] technique)
  • Joint mobilization – joint mobilization is the most powerful technique available to most massage and manual therapists. It is the only method that can release individual hypomobile segments of the spine. Learn how to perform this technique safely and effectively.
  • The neck workshop also teaches how to treat the anterior neck safely and effectively.

Each in-person workshop offers a Certificate of Completion and continuing education (CE) hours through the MTABC.  Each distance learning course is divided into chapters/modules and offers Certificates of Achievement and CE hours through the NCBTMB (see workshops / distance learning page for more details).

After completing all five in-person workshops and the two distance learning courses, a Certificate of Achievement is awarded that certifies you as a Clinical Orthopedic Massage Therapist (COMT), designating you as an advanced orthopedic therapist.

The in-person workshop courses are:

  • Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy Techniques for the Neck (2 days – 14 CE hours)
  • Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy Techniques for the Low Back and Hip (2 days – 14 CE hours)
  • Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy Techniques for the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Extremity (2 days – 14 CE hours)
  • Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy Techniques for the Hip and Lower Extremities (2 days – 14 CE hours)
  • Advanced Joint Motion Palpation Assessment and Joint Mobilization of the Spine (2 day – 7 CE hours)
